SLER2025: A Successful Experience

The conference featured many participants from different countries. The theme of the conference is 'pathway to progress: teaching innovation and inspiration interchange'. Several topics were discussed, particularly AI and its implementation in teaching and assessment. This report highlights the key takeaways from the sessions, speakers, and networking opportunities I encountered during the event.

I attended the keynote talks and all other sessions. They were very inspiring. Notable speakers include Prof. Marina Mattheoudakis , who delivered a great keynote: Reimagining foreign language education in the 21st century: Content as a catalyst for language learning. Their insights into CLIL and language learning were particularly thought-provoking and aligned with my interests in English as a Medium of Instruction and teaching content subjects.

Additionally, I enjoyed the panel discussion on ‘AI and education and tomorrow’. Various issues were raised, such as the use of AI in teaching and assessment, developing critical thinking through AI, etc. Moreover, research on corpus linguistics was present, highlighting the role of corpora in teaching.

At the conference I presented a talk entitles 'A New Internationalization Policy for Teaching English for Academic Research':

In the talk, I introduced a new policy to raise awareness of promoting the status of English as a required language for academic research. The suggested policy is based on finding a compromise between linguistic and political decisions. 

Overall, the conference was a rewarding experience that provided both professional growth and valuable networking opportunities. The insights gained will be instrumental in shaping my future projects and furthering my expertise in linguistics and language education.

STuTs-75: A Success and An Amazing Experience 

The 75th Student Tagung Sprachwissenschaft (STuTs-75) took place from the 9th to the 12th of May of 2024 at the University of Graz, Austria. As a conference for linguistics students, it aims to gather students from various universities to discuss their research and exchange ideas. 

The conference featured 68 presentations, including student talks, workshops and keynotes, by presenters from different countries. There were also two poster sessions. The talks discussed interesting topics in linguistics, such as sign language, language variation, phonology, syntax, etc. 

 My experience was tremendously inspiring. I learnt from the participants’ presentations. I met my colleagues with whom I organized STuTs-73 and STuTs-74. I also got the opportunity to present a poster and an oral presentation. My poster presents the implications of World Englishes in teaching pedagogy highlighting the importance of acknowledging linguistic diversity. This topic was interesting for some students who asked various inquiries. 

My oral presentation aims to present a part of my research on Language Policy (LP) in the Tunisian context. The study compares research on language policy in Tunisia to the international scenario. The comparison aims to advance research in LP in Tunisia and to conduct research on minority languages, family policy and the perceptions of local stakeholders in policy creation and implementation. 

I attended several keynotes and talks. They were very interesting. I enjoyed the keynote entitled ‘Workshop on Kinyarwanda’ by Dr. Jennifer Brunner. I enjoyed doing some tasks about noun classes in Kinyarwanda. It was amazing to perform tasks in a language that I do not speak!
